Horseradish trees are attractive ornamental plants. Since they have to be cultivated in our buckets in our latitudes, moringa trees are an ornament on the balcony and terrace. If you want, you can harvest the aromatic leaves and give dishes a hearty taste.

There are many possible uses and a horseradish tree is always a gift with which you can make other hobby gardeners happy. So why not think about multiplying the miracle trees? If you follow the instructions and advice below, it will be easy for you to grow young plants and to create enthusiasm for yourself and others.

There are two ways to propagate the Moringa tree:

  • seed
  • cuttings

Horseradish trees multiply through cuttings

If you already have a strong Moringa plant, you can easily multiply it with cuttings. Since the horseradish tree is very well tolerated by cutting, the annual pruning in early spring does not necessarily have to be used for cutting cuttings. The best time to get cuttings is from June to August.

" Tip: Cuttings that are cut near the root root more quickly.

The cuttings should be cut about 20 centimeters long. A separate growing container is selected for each cutting. You can fill conventional growing soil into the plant pots. The cuttings are put in the plant pots and placed warm and bright. The planters can be placed in the blazing sun. Horseradish trees tolerate temperatures up to 45 degrees. However, there should not be excessive temperature fluctuations at the location. You should also avoid drafts.

Now you have to be patient for a few weeks. As soon as new leaves develop, successful cultivation can be assumed, because then roots will also be formed.

  • Cut the cutting
  • Select planter
  • Fill the planter with soil
  • Insert cutting
  • Set up planter why and bright
  • Wait for rooting

Horseradish trees multiply via seeds

In addition to the cuttings, the horseradish tree can also be propagated via seeds. Either you get them from an existing plant or you can buy them if you don't have your own Moriga tree. It is important that you water the seeds for a day or two before sowing.

Each seed receives its own planter. You can use smaller clay pots or yogurt cups for this. The plant pots are filled with growing soil. The substrate is easy to moisten. The seeds swollen by the watering are now placed on the substrate and pressed into the earth about one centimeter deep. The plant pots now need a warm place. The full sun is optimal. In any case, cultivation should take place at room temperature. Cold and drafts should be avoided.

After about two weeks, the first seeds will start to germinate. If other leaflets have developed in addition to the cotyledons, the young plants are converted into a larger planter.

cultivation methodWhat needs to be considered?
  • Cuttings are preferably cut in early summer.

  • Each cutting receives a separate planter.

  • Cuttings must be placed warm and bright.
  • Not every seed of the horseradish tree can germinate.

  • Fresh seeds germinate best.

  • The seeds should be kept evenly warm.

  • The plant pots should be watered regularly.

What should be considered when caring for the young plants?

Once the seedlings have developed sufficiently, they are transferred to a larger flower pot. This should have a diameter of about 20 centimeters and also have about this height. Cactus soil is very suitable as a substrate for growing. This is loose and sandy, which corresponds to the location requirements of the Moringa plant. The irrigation water can also drain off easily and does not accumulate in the planter. The larger planters should also be set up bright and warm.

»Light & water

Depending on the season, the planters can also be placed on the balcony or terrace. The young plants spend the winter in a bright location at room temperature. So that the plantlets continue to develop well, it is advisable to use an additional light source in the form of plant spotlights, e.g. to worry about this here. Irrigation is also necessary in winter. However, they should be watered sparingly so that there is no waterlogging. The plant from the Himalayas cannot tolerate this, not even for a short time.

»Cut back

If you have grown small trees about half a meter high, you can cut back the tips slightly so that the plant branches well. The horseradish tree grows very quickly and the side shoots should also be shortened when they are about 20 centimeters long. You should repeat this pruning two more times for the young plants. Then you can let the small tree grow and only intervene if long shoots form or if the growth habit does not suit you.

If the seeds do not germinate

Generally speaking, not every seed will germinate reliably. It can be assumed that about seven to eight of ten plants form a germ. If the expiry date of the seeds has passed, you will also have little luck in gaining young plants. Therefore, pay attention to the expiry date when buying or use as fresh as possible seeds that you have obtained yourself or received from a friend or neighbor.

Consistent temperatures above 20 degrees are important for reliable germination. The young trees also need sufficient light. So help yourself in the cold season with an additional light source.
